Yacht Liquidators

Purchasing from yacht liquidations

If you have sought out a yacht for sale, you might have run across companies which are offering the yachts for liquidation costs, or you might have found a few yachting manufacturers which have undergone liquidation recently. For the boat buyer, understanding what this process entails and the benefits and risks of purchasing from a Yacht Liquidator are important. Here is what you need to know.

Salvage vs. Liquidation

Often, the terms salvage and liquidation tends to get confused. While there are some similarities in the way in which the yachts are sold, there are fundamental differences which set them apart. Firstly, salvaged boats tend to be those which have issues or those yachts which cannot under normal circumstances be sold to dealerships and “mainstream” vendors. Liquidation does not necessarily mean that the boat is below par.

Liquidation simply means that the possessor of the yacht was not able to fulfill the cost of ownership and therefore the lender or the investor has repossessed the assets and seeks to sell the property to recover the costs owed to them. One such company which saw liquidation, but did not have a sub-standard product was Oyster Yachts. While there is nothing wrong with the construction or the functionality of the yachts, the company was not able to offset the costs owed and therefore, as of February 2018, has filed liquidation.

Liquidations vs. “standard” sale

With the standard Yacht boat sale, there are a few assurances that the purchaser receives. These include the warranty, the motor maintenance and repair warranty, and in some cases packaged routine inspection and services. Yet, with the liquidation sale, you are not working with a Yachter, you are working with a financial institution or investor. As such, the person selling the yacht typically does not focus the attention on the sell points and yachting amenities. Rather, the investor or bank focuses on covering the losses incurred from the lack of payment. This means that while the yacht is sold for substantially less than if you were to purchase new, it is sold as-is with no warranties or guarantees.

A plus side to Yacht Liquidations

While there is a bit of a risk in purchasing a yacht as-is, there is also a substantial benefit. Because the vessel is being sold by someone strictly with financial motivations, you may be able to obtain packaging and upgrades on the model which would cost extra under other buying circumstances. The reason is that when the yacht is acquired by the yacht liquidator, the boat is typically sold for the amount owed. The exception to this is when the boat’s negative capital is substantially less than the value of the vessel. In these instances, the bank or investor may choose to use the blue book value of the yacht when pricing it for auction/sale.
