Boston Whaler Models History

A look at the journey of Boston Whaler

Boston Whaler is one of the more recognized manufacturers of fishing boats in the Florida region. With Boston Whaler models history including the Boston Whaler Super Sport, Boston Whaler Montauk, Boston Whaler Dauntless, Boston Whaler Vantage, Boston Whaler Conquest, and Boston Whaler Outrage, it is a bit difficult to envision how far the company has come. Yet, it has developed quite a bit. With over 60 years of manufacturing Boston Whaler is as iconic to Gulf and Atlantic fishing, entertainment, and leisure as surfing and shell collecting.

A strong beginning

Founding of the Boston whaler was Dick Fisher’s father. His father had a vision for a boat which was durable, low maintenance, and built well.  From the founding, the company has not gone with the make it cheap, use it, and build another mentality. Instead, the company has focused on a build it right, take care of it, and then make it last.

The original Boston Whaler models were designed as a sort of sailboat fishing boat. This design did not go to well. Ray Hunt helped to develop the 13-footer outboard. What is unique about this Boston Whaler Models History is that it introduced a triple V design to the hull. But it was not the triple V design which has made it so popular, it is the unsinkable legend of the boats.

Unsinkable Boats

Driving the design of the Boston Whaler models history is the development of the sandwich foam which allows for the boat to be unsinkable. The Boston Whaler Sports model was the first model which would have the clamp and foam in the hull. And while the manufacturing of the boats is now rather optimized, the pouring and casting of the 13’3 boat took 3 days originally. This says a great deal about the dedication to the quality of the boat. A company which would spend the time, resources, and do the research to ensure their boats are built beyond industry standards, is one worth considering.

A transition to power

60 years ago, the outboard motors were not at all like the ones offered today. Due to the advancements in the power, the outboard design has had to transition over the years. Now, the Boston Whaler boats for sale are oriented to power, family sports, and to fishing. Standard on most of the boats is at least one 300 Mercury engine. And because the Boston Whaler boats are so versatile and because the company wishes boat owners to be able to customize their Boston Whaler models, it is not uncommon to see post market changes with 350s, 150s, or other brands (such as Yamaha motors or Suzuki).

The modern models

Where the classic Boston Whaler boats for sale were built upon the precept that you would have a boat which would haul and navigate like the Whalers of old while at the same time being unsinkable and fun to use, the newer models have taken on a bit of an evolutionary transition.  The Boston Whaler 330 Outrage, for example, is designed to have a high provisional V-hull.  This results in a softer and safer ride. Additionally, as the boat is over the 30-foot marker, hard chines and lifting strakes create a more optimize handling of the boat.

While the larger boats tend to epitomize the technology and engineering advancements, especially with the inclusion of the Raymarine electronics which are available, the smaller boats tend to capture the essence of the family angler boat. Boston Whaler Montauk, Boston Whaler Vantage, and even the small Boston Whaler super sport have the outboard design, modern center console configuration, but also that classic Boston Whaler layout. Perhaps it is the canvas tops and the fold backs which lend more to the traditional feel, or maybe it is the deep setting hulls on these smaller craft which give that perception. Regardless of whether it is larger or smaller, one thing is certain. Boston Whaler has stood by its founding thesis of building a quality boat which will last.
