Built with the mindset that an American built boat can have the same durability and dependency as foreign Yacht competitors, Catalina Yachts claims to have the largest selection of large custom built Yachts. Founded in 1970 by Frank Butler, Catalina Yachts have seen substantial growth in its demands. While many of the clients are returning customers, a great deal of the clientele is new. If you wish to purchase a Catalina boat for sale, here is what you should know.
Well built boats, not reinventing the wheel
According to Frank Butler, President of Catalina Yachts, “When we design a new boat, we don’t try to reinvent the wheel each time. We incorporate proven features with new ideas and a lot of boatowners’ suggestions.” This is not new to the Yacht building industry. Most boat builders borrow and use the things which work. Catalina Yachts are just stating the obvious. But what are some of these innovative features which are coupled with the industry standards? Over the years the innovation has been the Cataliana 22 Sport which helped accommodate one-design racing, the optimization of building space, and the diversification of the building into multiple functional divisions (those being the sport, cruiser, and ocean series.).
Catalina Yacht’s fleet
While the company allows for variations to the boats they offer, there are three main fleets offered. These are the Sport Series, Cruiser, and Ocean Series. The brand consists of 12 base yachts, the majority of which are in the Sport series. Boats start at 12.5’ and go up to the mid 40’ Yachts. Potential buyers should note that there are fundamental aesthetic and functional differences between the Sport Series Catalina 22 Sport and the Ocean Series Catalina 425. For one, the 22 Sport has a sail and a mast, giving it more of a sailboat feeling, but has a narrow design. The Ocean Series Yachts have the large mast, but have a larger hull as well as a high gunwale.
Common Navigation
One of the features that you will find in the Catalina brand is that the main navigation is not towards the bow of the vessels but more to the stern of the boat. This goes to the sailboat style of the Yachts. True, you do have some navigational control in the central portion of the boat, but for the main part, the bow serves as a casting deck and lookout deck, the center as the base and entrance for the cabin, and the stern is given the space for seating and navigation.
Where is the best place to sail the Catalina Brand boats?
Catalina Yachts are a combination between the power sport boat and the sail boat. As such, the boats are more equipped to handle offshore leisure cruising. Use of the Yachts is great for the Tampa Bay area, the Florida Keys, and for offshore or cruising in the Atlantic and the Gulf. Since the larger boats have a cabin, they can be used for multiple day excursions. Catalina Yachts are primarily inboard motor configurations and therefore cannot be used in most of Florida’s freshwater. The smaller boats, such as the 16’ may be able to be used for recreational purposes in the larger ponds and lakes in the area.
