Common Yellowfin Boat Problems
Common issues with Yellowfin boats for sale
Those seeking a Yellowfin Boat should consider the pros and cons of ownership. While purchasing a boat new does minimize the risk for some of the issues with the vessel, it is not a definitive guarantee that there will not be any issues. Pre-owned boats may have a few issues, but generally these have been resolved. Regardless of whether you purchase a boat new or used, there will be problems which need to be addressed. Here are a few of the common Yellowfin Boat problems worth consideration.
Scrubbing the Surface
It has been reported that the Yellowfin boats which are in the 30 foot range, specifically the Yellowfin 32 have an issue with launching in anything but deep water. There is a substantial amount of scrubbing of the hull on the surface. And while the hull is durable, it is not made to withstand continuous bumping and scraping on the bottom. Know the depth of the water before you attempt to launch.
It being stated that the launch of the boat is difficult, it should be noted that once in the water, the boat does respond well to trolling as well as to navigation. Keep an eye on your bow and on the deadrise and you should be fine.
Console Connectors
Another common problem with the yellowfin boats for sale are the wire connectors on the engine components. This can cause the display screens to have static or to become unresponsive. Depending upon the loose connection, you may also have a clicking sound when you try to turn over the engine or use certain features. Check the engine container to visually inspect for any corrosion on the wires or any ill mounted wires. Should you find any loose wires, then a simple tightening should be able to fix the issue. However, you should know that the battery connection wires are vulnerable to going out and will need to be upgraded and changed out periodically. This is just the nature of boating on salt water. The connectors corrode over time.
Leaks in the Live wells/bait wells
Older models may find that there are a few leaks in the live wells and the bait wells. This issue is typically caused by the seal being worn out and is very simple to fix. You do not, in most cases, need to replace the entire box but rather just the seal at the top of the door. It is recommended that you inspect the box with and without water in it to ensure that you do not have a crack or another issue to address.
Water Intrusion
Though rare, water intrusion on Yellowfin Boats does occur. Water can get as deep as 2 inches on the backup. A cleaning of the scupper is typically the solution on self-bailing cockpit designed boats.
Engine Problems
Mercury Engines have a level of speeds which give the boat a ton of power. Yellowfins are known for their speed and for the navigational ease of the craft. However, Mercury engines are also notorious for getting water into the head of the engine if you transition too quickly between the gears. Ensure that you slow down the rpms of the engine prior to doing any shifts as you could end up blowing your motor heads on your Yellowfin if you transition too quickly.
