Sailboats for Sale
Still Among the Most Iconic Boats in the Industry
Boats are found in all different styles, but nothing seems to be more of a symbol of oceanic life quite like the sailboat. The sails rising from the seas are a beautiful site. Before deciding on specific sailboats for sale, a buyer should understand the different sailboat types and styles available, ensuring that the sailboat they desire fits with their individual needs. Types vary according to the amount of sails, keels, and masts appointed to the vessel. To help buyers with this important decision, here is a little bit more about the various sailboats for sale.Read More
Types of Sailboats
Sloops – The first sailboat on the market is still one of the most popular styles available. Sloops are the simplest design with a single mast and two main sails. Sloop sailboats are known throughout the sailing industry as the purest/traditional design.
Other names for the sloop are: Bermuda Rig, Marconi Rig, or Bermudian Rig. Sloop sailboats have been known to reach speeds of up to 20 knots and are available in many different lengths.
Cutters – One step up from a sloop is a cutter. This style maintains an additional sail between the mainsail and the headsail. Cutters have the mainsail further aft than sloops with a jib and mainsail attached. Most modern sailboats fall between 26’ to 40’, but there are always exceptions to that rule.
Ketch – Ketches are becoming more popular among large scale yachts, as the design allows for two masts. The forward mast is considerably larger than the aft or mizzen mast. Some ketches maintain a staysail and are known as a staysail ketch, or cutter rigged.
Cat Ketches – Cat Ketche sailboats are distinctly different than the standard ketch for two reasons. Firstly, there is no standing rigging in place to support the masts. Secondly, is that the aft mast is larger than the forward mast. A Cat Ketch is also known for being among the more balanced rigs available.
Yawls – Yawls have been credited as being one of the first commercial style fishing vessels. Their design allows for a small aft mast, allowing for the boat to be steadied for hauling in nets. The mizzen sail is also located aft the rudder, which is different from a ketch design.
Schooners –Schooners are one of the more well-known varieties of sailboats for sale. The boat maintains multiple masts and has the iconic appearance found in many of the classic stories portraying pirates. The mainmast is either taller or the same height as the foremast. Schooners also have the iconic crow’s nest, though modern vessels tend not to be equipped with them.
Gaffers – The layout and design of the Gaffer sailboat is less popular than many of the other styles. Gaffed rigged sailboats are constructed with a mainsail that is supported by a spar or the gaff. The gaff is hauled into place up the mast by a separate halyard. The Gaffer style is less practical, primarily due to the weight of the rigging.
