Boats for Sale in White Springs

Buy a boat in White Springs Florida

Known for the historical caves as well as for the Suwanee River which flows through the town, White Springs Florida is just an hour’s drive south of Valdosta Georgia. Because of its location, as well as its proximity to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, boat seekers may find a unique variety of boats for sale in White Springs. If you are seeking a boat in Hamilton County, here is what you should know about the town.

A brief history

White Springs was first incorporated in 1831, making the town just shy of 200 years old. Originally, the area was known as Jackson Springs, built upon a precept that the River would provide a substantial amount of income serving as a ferry port. However this was not as lucrative as the businessmen had hoped and so the town was transferred to James Hooker, James Prevatt, Joseph Bryant, and John Lee. The men saw the touristic potential in marketing the healing waters of the area and used the water and the ferry to build White Spring’s reputation. It was not until after 1882 that the city was laid out in the configuration that you see (somewhat) today. The change was a result of Wight and Powell (Georgia men) purchasing the land and renaming it White Sulphur Springs, which later became White Springs.

Boat seekers in White Springs should note that the majority of vessels in the area will be oriented to navigation of the  Suwanee River and close-by fresh water.

Boats for the Suwannee River

Primarily, fishing on the Suwannee River will yield a catch of bass. There are several large mouths and Suwannee Bass within the waters. The bag limit for striped bass is 3 each. Fish must be more than 18 total length. There is a 20 fish combined bag limit. As this is a part of Florida’s freshwater, you may find Triploid grass carp, Alligator gars, and Gulf Sturgens. All three of these fish are protected by Florida Legislations and cannot be harvested or stocked, especially the Gulf Sturgen which is Federally protected.

Areas of the Suwannee River rise above the 6-foot mark. However, this does not mean that the river is consistently deep. In many instances, the fluctuations and the rapids make the depth unpredictable. Boats used on the Suwannee are recommended paddle or canoe style. Yet, in deeper water a singular outboard engine can be used. You may find that a twin stroke, over that of a four stroke, would be preferred in this water. Skiffs and flat bottom boats can be used in the river, but with caution as the rapids can be quite harsh in areas. Bass boats and wider beamed outboard fisharounds are preferred. Check with the White Springs boating and water management division for more information about regulations on boating in the Suwannee River.

Boats from Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

You may find that there are a few boats for sale in White Springs which are catered to exploring the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge of Georgia. These could include airboats. As the area does not allow for motors in the water, the only other option would be boats void of an out board such as the canoe or paddle boat. According to Florida law Chapter 2006-172 of the Senate Bill No 1959 states that if you purchase an airboat in Florida that they must have a muffler or sound regulating device, that flags be displayed,  and that it cannot be operated in the waters of the state unless it is equipped with a mast of at least 10 feet. There are also regulations regarding the Gross weight of the vessel. You are encouraged to read the full text on the Laws of Florida and airboats and to seek legal advice should you have questions.
