About the Sea Hunter 28 Floridian
What you need to know about this center console
When it comes to purchasing exceptional boats for the Gulf or for the Atlantic, there are a few brands which are prominent. One such brand would be SeaHunter. And while the boats are apt for the harsher waters with the SeaHunter Tournament series, with boats ranging from 31’ to 45’, those which are more oriented to the shallower waters or those which wish to tow the boat easier may wish to consider the Sea Hunter 28 Floridian.
What kind of boat is the 28 Floridian?
The 28 Floridian from SeaHunter is an angler boat measuring 28 feet 5 inches O.L. Design wise, it is considered a center console with a hard top. There is a bit of space on the port and starboard which could give an owner a bit of the walkaround feel, however due to the narrow beam as well as to the functionality of the boat, the center console is the best description.
While the boat can be used for angler purposes primarily, the lower transom allows for the vessel to have dual functionality. Power poles are recommended on packages to (a) allow for the boat to navigate into shallow waters, as there are many lakes in Florida which require Power Pole anchoring and (b) when using the boat in the Gulf and in some parts of Southern Florida (primarily around the keys) you will want to have the power pole anchoring to serve as a stabilizer as well as a front anchor to reduce drifting and sway.
How much power does the 28 Floridian have?
It is common on the Sea Hunter 28 Floridian to find a two-outboard motor setup. Typically, these are 300 Yamaha engines. They are a bit larger than your 150, but the power which can be achieved through the motors has had tremendous reviews in the boating community. The 3000 HPDI is a 3.3L engines and not considered a four-stroke. Those who are used to the four-stroke will find that the twin engines do offer a high acceleration and low fuel consumption.
Those who do not wish to have the Yamaha, default, engines could post market swap the outboards for a Mercury or any 76 degree block motor for that matter. However, if you are going to go this route, it is probably more beneficial to seek out a pre-owned vessel rather than to buy a new SeaHunter 28 Floridian.
What makes Sea Hunter 28 Floridian ideal?
The length of the boat is really the focal selling point for the SeaHunter 28 Floridian. The length is long enough to where there is less problems in the open water of the Gulf or the Atlantic (as smaller craft tend to have a bit more rocking and tossing about in the water). It is still not recommended that you take the vessel offshore for extended lengths of time, but for a day trip, it does make for quick transport to the best angler spots in Florida. Additionally, the shorter length allows for the boatman/woman to use a trailer, as opposed to needing to dock/marina the boat directly off the shore or find a crane lift for the vessel. Granted, it is a length which pushes the limits on length, but it can be towed.
When towing the Sea Hunter 28 Floridian the best option will be to have the same safety precautions and power which would be allotted to a 5th wheel, as the length is quite similar.
General Summary of the Vessel
The Sea Hunter 28 Floridian is primarily designed for the fisherman/woman. As such there are several rocket rod holders on the hardtop center console. The navigation seat of the boat is a bar style plush chair. Navigation is from a one screen, center steer mount station. Seating on the Sea Hunter 28 Floridian is limited to the reverse side of the captain’s chair, seating along the transom, and a few seats at the bow. Of course, you can customize the layout to add or remove some of the seating features. 360 rod holders are common. Gunwale on the SeaHunter 28 Floridian is limited, almost to the point of being purely for aesthetics. Again, the boats features will vary dependent upon the packages and such the owner chooses.
