Seven Marine 557 Fuel Consumption
The Fuel Consumption on the Seven Marine 557 is impressive
When looking at the Seven Marine 557 engines, it is clear to see why it created such a stir at the Miami International Boat Show. Yet, with the hype diminished and the motors being on the market for a while, one starts to consider the technical and practical use of the engines. Are they just behemoths among the outboard engines, or do they offer more power with adequate fuel consumption. Much like a large truck which may look good on the exterior but get horrible MPGs, the skepticism to the large Seven Marine motors is that they are too big for the everyday boater. However, those looking into the purchase of the 557 Seven Marine may be surprised by the Seven Marine 557 Fuel Consumption statistic.
The Fuel Consumption numbers
The Seven Marine 557 is a 90 Degree V-8 engine which allows for 557ph from a 1.9L TVS supercharged and intercooled induction system. The cooling system is closed loop with a returnless center feed injection fuel system. The Fuel system is on a stainless-steel fuel rail with a stainless dual overboard exhaust. Fuel needed for the 557 Seven Marine is 89-Octane compatible fuel, though the 92 octane is recommended for optimal performance.
The testing for Seven Marine 557 fuel consumption was done on Twins. The Fuel economy for Twin Seven Marine engines at 65MPH came to 72.2 GPH (gallons per hour). This is lower than both the Mercury VERADO which tested at 98.5 GPH and the Triple Yamaha 350s which tested at 92.9 GPH.
MPH Comparability
Testing was conducted on the Seven Marine 557 as to the MPH and RPM (testing was performed on an intrepid boat). In all tests, the RPM was roughly 200 rpms less at 40 to 75 MPH than that of the triple Yamaha and the triple Mercury. When it got to the upper MPGs, the variation was more than 500 or more, comparatively.
In terms of MPH to MPG, there was a -4.2% change in the 40 MPH to MPG on the Seven Marine 557 fuel consumption compared to the other two engines. This is not as high of a difference as one would wish for an engine with has such a high price tag. Yet, the difference, and perhaps the justification of the price can be seen in the higher MPH to MPG rating with a +20-fuel economy at high-speed cruising.
While the testing of the motor was to 75MPH, there is no information which could be found about the higher speeds for which the engine boasts it can reach, other than information from boating forums and reviews. According to these sources, the boat can cruise at 85MPH on a 5-engine configuration. Some have put this number at 95. Neither 85 or 95 have fuel efficiency numbers, as it can be concluded that if you are going that fast with this size motor, you probably are not that concerned with how much is being consumed.
What you should consider about the testing
Boat buyers should keep in mind that the testing of the Seven Marine 557 fuel consumption was done in fresh water in the north of the country, specifically on Lake Michigan. As the company is Wisconsin based, most of the testing was done in that area. Why does this matter? First, the water is different. Fresh water to Salt Water will yield slightly different results. Secondly, as the ocean and the gulf have waves and other factors to a higher extreme than Lake Michigan, the fuel efficiency ratings on the motor may fluctuate for those intending to use the motors with their Atlantic center console boat or gulf angler craft. That being stated, the owners and designers of the Seven Marine 557 engines are former Mercury engineers, so it would go to reason that salt water as well as Atlantic and Gulf water considerations were given to the testing and fuel efficiency.
