About the New Mercury Outboard Motors
A review of the new line of outboard motors from Mercury
Mercury outboard engines have long been a standard in the boating community. Therefore, when the company announced at the Miami International Boat Show that they were including additional power options to the new V6 engine, a buzz stirred in the community. The Verado outboard engines has grown in popularity in recent years, especially with the 350 HP engine. As with most engine configurations on the market, each year the motors get a tweaking/fine-tuning and a new edition is released. However, unlike previous years, the Mercury outboard engine options are expanding.
A new look
The new Mercury Four Stroke V6 engines have been redesigned. Consequently, the aesthetics of the casing have changed as well. Older models have a rounder look and feel. However, the newer Mercury outboard engines, especially those of the 150 to 250s have a boxier look. Sharp angles and a definitive separation of the top to the bottom mark the main design features. The all new Mercury FourStroke also has a new powerhead design.
V8 Engines
Mercury further expands the line of new outboards this year with the Pro X5 line of V8 motors. These motors are offered in a 200, 225, 250, and 300 HP option. Unlike the V6 engines which have a more angular look, and a more distinctive separation between the various sections of the motor, the Pro X5 models have a sleek, streamline aesthetic, accented with vertical lines (black and red are standard).
Features of the New Mercury Outboard Motors
While the Verado is experiencing a redesign of the motor, some of the main features will remain the same, specifically where it comes to the rpms and the torque that is available on the motors. However, an understanding of the dual overhead cam four-valve design as well as the weight and the basic features is beneficial. The 200hp outboard (the more commonly equipped motor for outboards) weighs 475 pounds, beating Yamaha’s F300 by around 10 pounds. Boat buyers should keep in mind that the Hp as well as the type of boat will dramatically play into the specifications and performance of the engine.
Intuitive Features
To persuade boat buyers to configure their cabin cruisers, performance boats, sports yachts, and fishing boats with the new Mercury outboard engines for sale, the company has included several intuitive features. These features include the 87-Octane Standard, Idle Charge battery-management, Electronic Oil Level Sensor, Top Cowl Service Door, oil and drain filter with no-spill design, maintenance-free valve train, and Adaptive Speed Control.
Pro XS 200-300hp models feature a 1.25 inch diameter prop shaft, offering a 1.75:1 gear ratio. This adds to the low-water pickups and the mounting and trim functionality.
In addition to the standard features of the outboard are several options. These include the option of mechanical or digital controls, or hydraulic or power steering, and of course color options for the panels, such as found in Hydrasport and other luxury boats which offer the Mercury outboard motors.
Are the new motors from Mercury worth equipping?
While there are some advantages to the new motors, primarily where the fuel efficiency is concerned, many of the features of the Mercury motors has remained. Those who wish to purchase a boat but not incur the fees of the newer outboard boats for sale may wish to purchase pre-owned. That being stated, the new Mercury Pro XS and the V6 engines do offer the boat buyer the opportunity to maximize the hp and torque of their vessel. Furthermore, if you have an older boat and need a new motor, the Mercury outboard motors for sale in 2018 may offer motor warranties. Pre-owned boats with the new mercury outboard motors are apt to have transferable warranties on the motor configuration. Ask the lister about such details.
