Common Seven Marine Problems

Issues you may find with the Seven Marine Engines

Seven Marine engines boasts of being the most powerful outboard engines on the market. And while performance testing has given credibility to this claim, there are those who would question the quality of the motor and its components. Granted, these are very durable and top of the line outboards, but this does not mean that they are above scrutiny and a due diligent eye, especially if you consider the price tag that is associated with this brand of outboard engines for sale. As such, here are some common Seven marine problems / concerns.

The target market

I doubt that Seven Marine sees the price bracket as being an issue, but for many boat owners, the Seven Marine outboard engines are the equivalent of a Ferrari or other luxury car, meaning that the boating company is catering to a selected number of wealthy boat owners. There is a market for this, but from a practical stand point, the price bracket on the Seven engine could be made a bit more competitive with the other brands on the market.  Triple Seven Marine 557s with joystick steering cost $270,000 for 1,671 HP. Granted you would need to have 5 350HP engines to match that. At 20 to 30k per engine (for a mercury Verado 6 cylinder), the price is still 100k outside of being competitive.

Even boaters who have access to the Seven Marine engines may find that they cannot use the motor. While the increase in power is desirable, the weight of the motor is increased as well. Some transoms may not have the capabilities to handle multiple Seven Marine engines.

Tested in fresh water, shipped to salt water

Common Seven Marine problems are that they are generally tested and manufactured in fresh water. Since production is Wisconsin based, most of the R and D is off of Lake Michigan. The issues that arise is between the internal components where there is a difference in the materials, gaps for the salt water to seep in, and such. That being stated, the Seven Marine Team does fly in their tech support to any location to fix the engine should there be any issues which arise. Additionally, the designers and the builders of these boats are, in a large part, former Mercury engineers. One would hope that they considered the salt water factor in the design.

Minor Tweaking needed in first 100 hours of use

Like with many outboard engines, there will be a need to tweak certain components within a short time of use. There have been some reports that common Seven Marine problems include steering pump issues and fuel pump issues. This would seem to lean to the argument that the smaller components tend to corrode faster due to not having been tested in salt water.

Most of the reviews of the Seven Marine Outboard engines from actual boat owners state that the motors are not really for longevity but for aesthetic purposes. They are luxury based and therefore those who purchase them are doing so to be seen with a powerful motor, not for a powerful motor that will last 4000 hours or more. But again, the customer service for these engines is top notch as they do come to you and fix the engine. NO questions asked.

A very long wait time for very elite motors

While the Seven Marine motors tend to populate the boating magazines and the boating shows, there are not that many which can be seen in the water. Whether this is due to the luxury mentality that the boats should be used as aesthetic showpieces, or if the motors are just not selling as well as they are being portrayed is unknown. What is known is that they are not mass produced at this time, making those who wish to have a new Seven Marine motor for sale wait quite an extensive amount of time before getting their outboard.
