Seven Marine 627 Fuel Consumption
What you need to know about the Seven Marine 627 before you go to the open waters
When it comes to boats, the engine is perhaps the most important part of the vessel. In many instances you are purchasing the motor more than the actual craft. As such, knowing the fuel consumption and the power of the motor is important. Seven Marine, which is equipped on vessels such as HydraSports 53’ Suenos or on select SeaHunter boats. Common to the Seven Marine motors is the 627. And while the HP and the design is impressive, boaters want to know more about the Seven Marine 627 fuel consumption. Here is what you need to know about the Seven Marine 627 fuel consumption.
The length of the boat
The Seven Marine 627 fuel consumption is greatly dependent upon the weight and the length of the boat. That being stated, the target market is for boats which are over 40’ in length. Therefore, the estimated consumption can be considered to be fairly accurate for most larger center console and outboard motor craft. Seven Marine has optimized the ECM (Engine Control Module) so that the motor functions on a rated speed of 5,500 rpm. This is about 100 rpms higher than the Seven Marine 557 motors which is currently available. Smaller vessels which equip the Seven Marine 627 motors will find that calibration of the motor may be needed to increase fuel efficiency.
Torque Power
The Seven Marine 627 Fuel Consumption is further optimized through the new combustion chamber and the precision engineering. According to Seven Marine, the 627 can deliver more than 600 pounds of torque per foot from only 3,00 of the 5500 rpms. This allows for the boat to function at lower rpms, while at the same time achieving top speeds and the power desired. Through the use of the lower RPMs the Seven Marine 627 fuel consumption is less.
ECU calibration
Lending more to the increase in the fuel consumption is the ECU calibration. Seven Marine has revised the ECU calibration to make the outboard more powerful. Power translations and multiple gear case options/gear ratios allow for tailoring the ECU to various vessels for peak performance and fuel efficiency.
Fuel Requirements
Although the Seven Marine engine claims to have higher fuel efficiency, there is still a requirement to have a minimum of 89 octane and 10 percent ethanol. Ethanol burns faster and so the low percentile for the fuel requirements does play into the efficiency of the engine. The 89 octane allows you to get better timing and mileage for the best results. Just like a vehicle, you will want to check to see if the Seven Marine 627 motor can handle higher premium fuel combinations, such as 91. It is not advised to use the 87 octane in the Seven Marine 627 engine as this will increase fuel consumption and could cause the engine to “ping” and could permanently damage the efficiency of the motor.
When purchasing a pre-owned boat with a 627 Seven Marine engine, ask the owner about the MPGs as well as the fuel he or she used in the vessel.
Learning from the past
If the Seven Marine 557 is any indicator of the fuel efficiency of the new 627 Seven Marine motor, then the top speeds and the rpms will be better optimized than the Mercury 300 and the Yamaha 350. As the company has stated that the 627 Seven Marine has optimized some of the more sluggish areas of the Seven Marine 557, it can be concluded that the 450 rpm difference between the Seven Marine and the Mercury Vrod 300 and the 200 rpm difference between the Seven Marine and the Yamaha 350 will increase.
In terms of the MPG, the Seven Marine 557 motor stayed around 1.2 until reaching speeds over 65MPH. The same will hold true for the Seven Marine 627 motor. Expect to have a 1.0 MPG for speeds of 40mph and then a .5 MPG for speeds over 65-75. Of course, the weight and the drag on the boat will also influence the overall MPGs, but given the consideration that the Seven Marine 627 motor was designed for boats over 40 feet LOS, one would hope that the average weight of these vessels was calculated into the engineering.
What boats are best suited for the maximum Fuel Efficiency from the 627?
Lighter but large craft are best suited for the Seven Marine 627 engine. However, when equipped with two or three outboard motors, the horsepower and the torque is sufficient for any vessel.
