Grady White boats are marketed as sportfishing vessels and have a 50 year history. Established in 1959 by Glen R. Grady and Don f. White, both men had decades of boat building experience. Specifically, Grady had worked for Chris Smith (now Chris-Craft boats) and Thompson boats (Cruisers Inc.). For the past 50 years the brand has become larger and so have the boats. If you are considering purchasing a Grady White, here are a few things that you should know.
Engines
Grady-White uses a variety of four stroke outboards in their boats. However, the company has remained loyal to the Yamaha Motor Corporation in terms of the brand they use. HP varies depending upon the length of the vessel ranging from 200 to the 350 HP. The partner ship between Grady and Yamaha is partly due to the performance and ratings of the engine and partly due to the proximity of the Grady Manufacturing facility to the Yamaha Engine Manufacturing facility in Florida.
Please note, older Grady boats are designed for the lighter two-stroke engines, and so potential boat owners may find that the extra weight of the 4 stroke engines could pose a problem, especially where it pertains to how the boat rests in the water.
How are Grady Boats manufactured?
Grady White boats are made following a 12-step process. Step one is building of the fiberglass from the outside inward with mold inspection. Step Two is to smooth the mold and spray the mold. In step three the resin is tested as well as the fiberglass to ensure that it meets standards. Steps four and five are the application of the fiberglass, the smoothing of the material, and the layering of the fiberglass to resin. Step six is the addition of the all composite structural materials on the boat and the beams. The transom support is also made during this time (this is solid aluminum) . Step seven and eight is the cooling and lamination phases where the hull is inspected for quality, grinds, widows, and openings are created. Step Nine is the addition of the hardware. Ten, the four stroke Yamaha is added to the boat and the electrical components for the console and other systems are installed. Eleven, the boat undergoes a 150 point checklist to ensure quality and standards are met. Finally, in Step Twelve, the boat receives a 15-min shower to ensure that there are no leaks in the boat and that it is ready to sail.
Models
Because Grady White boats have been available for quite a while, the models are abundant. They are divided into Center Console, Coastal Explorers, Dual Consoles, Express Cabins, and Walkaround Cabins. The specific models are as follows:
As you can see, none of the boats get over the 35’ mark. These boats are specifically intended for the freshwater to moderate saltwater use. They are not intended to be large charter boats or to be used for prolonged fishing trips (though the cabin boats can be used for such so long as packaging, safety, and such are considered). Because of the hardtop and the wrap around windshields on some of the models, even fishing in the Keys with a Grady White is an option as these features would minimize water intake into the boat as well as help to reduce rocking from wind and rough water.
