Florida Fishing Seasons Calendar 2018
Know what and where to fish in 2018
The weather is warming up and the cold season is over, and that means that fishing season is open. If you are looking for freshwater or saltwater fishing, then the season is quickly approaching. However, you can’t just grab your rod and reel and start casting. Different counties and different areas have regulations and stipulations on fishing. For the most part the regulations depend upon the type of vessel you own.
Outboard or Inboard fishing in 2018
If you wish to fish in Florida in 2018, the first thing to consider is whether you will be using an outboard or an inboard powered boat. The reason for this is that the inboard motors are highly regulated on the freshwater of Florida as per the manatee act. Outboard motors have less regulations until you get into the larger vessels.
In addition to the regulations, the inboard and the outboard boats have different approaches to angler features. Typically, when you have an inboard motor, there is a bit more space on the stern and transom for wrangling in a fish. Outboard motors tend to focus on the port and starboard to avoid any interference with the engines.
Know when you can go after your fish
All fish do not come into the same timeframe for fishing. Each month there are areas and types of fish which can be sought. January is Largemouth bass, Feb. is Striped Bass, and the Suwannee Bass is not open until August to name a few. In saltwater fishing in 2018 allows for Hogfish only to be caught from May 1 to October, Permit fish is closed from May to July, bay Scallops as well as oysters are closed (for the most part) during the summer months. Looking to bag a shark this season? Ensure that you know which sharks you can fish legally as there is a large list of prohibited species. Check the myfwc site for specifications.
When it comes to the Fishing calendar of 2018, the focus in dates is mainly to the freshwater angler, be careful about the locations as well as the type of fish, primarily bass, which you catch. Again, should you need information on the specific species and the opening/closing dates please see the Florida Seasonal fishing calendar and regulations.
Keep an eye on your bag limit and your boat
Every fish, regardless of the species, has a daily bag limit. Some of the limitations are per fisherman and some are per boat. Keeping a keen eye on your catches will do well in minimizing the risk of a fine. Ensure that if you have a charter boat that passengers remove their catches. Also, boaters are encouraged to review the size regulations of the fish. Most of the fish available during the 2018 fishing season have both a bag and a size limit.
Plan your trips
Regardless of whether you are freshwater fishing or fishing in the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic, you should plan out your trip. Some boats are more equipped for multiple day adventures, such as those with cabins and multiple outboard engines, and some are more suited to the hobbyist or the day adventure, such as those with a single outboard and a flatter hull. Additionally, if you are fishing, for example, bull shark, you will need to have the fish storage, bait wells, and rod holders to support that endeavor.
