Shopping Boats by Type

Your boat says a lot about you

The purchasing of a boat is a bit more complex than just going to a boat manufacturer and selecting what looks good. While it is true that you could do such, it is not responsible for a person to do so. There are different variables to consider when you look for a boat, primarily boat buyers will shop boats by type. By type it is meant the location, the use, and the water in which the vessel will be used. Here are some considerations about purchasing and shopping boats by type.

Buying a boat is pivoted upon the location

The first factor when you purchase a boat should be the location.  Areas such as the north east are more freshwater based then they are salt water based. The more you get to the New England states and the great lakes the more you will find that there is more of a necessity for such craft. The great lakes, are especially such. The mid-US has the Mississippi River but little use for Ocean Craft. However, the Coastal states would be more for the salt water. Understanding the geographic restrictions will help you to decide the craft that you need.

Additional to the larger picture, boat buyers should look into the parks, counties, and cities in which they wish to boat. Each district has its own set of regulations, and its own set of pros and cons for a boat. For example, in Georgia’s Lake Lanier the type of speed and motor on the craft is restricted. Some rivers in the south-eastern states do not allow for air boats, while in Louisiana they are popular in many counties.

The type of your boat is greatly dependent upon your intended use

Determining if you need a fresh water boat or a salt water boat is just the beginning of finding the perfect dream boat. The second step is to determine the functionality of the boat. Will you be an angler who wishes to get into the tight spaces? If so, you may want to look into the purchase of a pontoon boat, a skiff, or a Yellowtail boat as they are great at doing such. Those who are wishing to purchase a boat for speed would need to find a leading speed boat brand.

Size considerations

When you consider the size of the vessel that you will be purchasing, there are a few major considerations. These are:

  • Does the size of the boat require special storage/docking? If so how will you take care of the special needs of the vessel?
  • Can you legally use the boat in your intended boating location or do local boating regulations stifle its usability?
  • If you are purchasing a charter or a sizable luxury motor yacht, how will you maintain, man, and marine the boat?
  • Small boat purchasers should consider how they will tow the boat from place to place. Purchasing a boat trailer for your Sea Hunter, Boston Whaler, or Hydra Sport may require a specialized product from the manufacturer if not purchased with your pre-owned craft.
  • How many persons are expected to fit into the boat of your dreams? If you have a family of 6, then purchasing a 12 foot walkabout boat will probably not give much comfort.

Cost considerations

Perhaps the most important consideration when you are purchasing a boat is the cost. While it may be ideal to have a 40 foot motor luxury boat, the cost of such a vessel may not be realistic. Remember that you will not only have to pay for the boat purchase, but for the maintenance, engineering, boat yards, docking fees, gas, upkeep in the aesthetic, etc. Calculation of the cost to own, not just the cost of purchase should be noted when looking for the type of boat you wish to purchase.
