A Boater’s Paradise
Florida is known for being a boater’s paradise, but more specifically in the state, there are some places that stand out more than others for being boater friendly. Pinellas County is one of those areas. The county maintains an overall population of 960,730 people and showed a period of 4.8% growth between the current census and the previous one of 2010. Most of the population lives within the largest city in the county, St. Petersburg, but Clearwater is the county’s main government hub. The location of the county along the gulf side of the state allows it to have easy access to both the panhandle and up the west coast and even down into the keys, so it is quite a convenient place to live. For the boater, it provides a diversity of options. If you are looking to boat in Pinellas, here is what you should know.
Coastal Paradise
Pinellas County has an abundance of water, both saltwater and fresh. The lengthy coastline along the western border of the county provides plenty of room for deep sea fishing excursions and the calm inlets are available for those that wish to enjoy fishing closer to the coast. Pinellas County is also part of Tampa Bay, so traveling via boat to areas around the Bay is often faster than by land. Furthermore, if you consider the tourism of the area, the boating route provides less congestion at times than some of the roadways.
Since the boats are primarily oriented to the Gulf, expect the selection to be mainly Center Console boats, miniature yachts, sports cruisers, and power boats. Keep in mind that you may find some sailboats and luxury yachts, such as the Oyster or the Viking, as you will be within driving distance of Tampa Bay.
Transporting Your Boat
Even though there are several places to dock your vessel, such as Indian Rocks beach and Madeira Beach, there will be times where you will want transport your vessel via land. Depending upon the LOA of your vessel, and if you have the proper boating trailer to transport, you will find that Pinellas County is quite boat friendly, so transportation is relatively easy. If you intend on transporting a boat longer than 30’, it is recommended that you only travel via I-285 or Hwy 19 as these are both larger highways with wider lanes to accommodate the larger beamed vessel. For a direct route to the sea, consider taking W Bay Dr. off of Hwy 19 as it is still a relatively large road and connects directly to the gulf side.
