If you are not familiar with the area, here are a few things that you should know.
On the River
Feeding straight into Yankee town is the Withlacoochee River as well as Bennetts Creek and in part Johns Creek. Interestingly, there are no bodies of water within the boundary lines of Yankee town apart from some small private ponds. Everything is on the outskirts of the town. But this does not mean that you will not be able to find the boat that you are looking for. Right next to Yankeetown is Lake Rousseau and the Lake Rousseau State Recreational area.
Lake Rousseau has one marina. There are no boat ramps for the lake, though with a boat trailer you should be able to launch your bass boat or your smaller center console boats with ease. Lake Rousseau is known for large mouth bass, catfish, bluegill and crappie.
Fishing boats you are most likely to find in Yankeetown
While there is access to freshwater, the boats which you will find in more abundance will be the offshore angler boats or those which can be used for dual purposes. Expect to see boats which are longer than 30’ and equipped with tri or quad motor configurations. This is due to the water conditions of the gulf. Add to this the touristic nature of the town, the fishing industry, and the fact that there are no real ponds or lakes in the area, and the majority of the boats will be purchased and sold for use in the Gulf.
Those looking for the smaller skiff or the bay boats may want to think about Hernando, Inverness, Dunnellon, and cities around that stretch of small freshwater ponds and lakes.
Other boats you might find in Yankeetown
Since Yankeetown has a strong tourist base, and due to the marine life of the area, you may find some pontoon boats, pre-owned charter boats, cabin cruisers, houseboats, sailboats, Oyster Yachts (which are a bit like a hybrid between a sailboat and a yacht, dual hulls, and Sport Express Cruisers. Yankeetown is a bit secluded in comparison to other costal cities of the Gulf, and so the selection of vessels may be limited. However, as you have direct access to 98 and are close to Inglis, you may find listings close by if you cannot find the boat for sale in Yankeetown.
A Direct Launch
Two of the four borders of Yankeetown are water. On the south you have the Withlacoochee River, and to the west you have the Gulf. Launching in the Gulf is therefore extremely easy so long as you know a dock or a marina in which to launch. You do have a bit of small islands and sandbanks in the area, so those who have the larger yachts, the deeper Vee hull designs, and lower resting outboards may opt for launching by the straightway between Jones Creek and Cross Creek.
A note about boating from Yankeetown
Where there is direct access to the Gulf, to the north and to the south you have wildlife refuges and management areas. As such, the best course of action is to stay to the south of the Suwannee National Wildlife refuge.
