Viking Yachts
Building vessels for adventure and exploration
The term Viking is associated with the sea. Whether you are speaking of the historical clan or Viking Yachts, there is an immediate coupling with sea exploration and adventure. And while the company is not grounded in the Viking history, the name does suggest that there is a definitive focus on innovation, adventure, and exploration.
About Viking Yachts
Viking yachts have been available for over 50 years making them one of the more established brands in the Yachting community. The first yachts were built by Bob and Will Healey in 1954. This is not to say that the Viking boats were not being produced prior to this, as they were. Prior to becoming the Viking Yacht company, the brand was owned by Peterson-Viking Builders. However, it was not until the Healey brothers acquired the company that the larger vessels began to be fabricated. Peterson kept the boats at a maximum length of 37 feet.
Since its beginnings, the company has grown in demand as well as its reputation. To date, there have been over 4,000 Viking Yachts crafted and launched.
Models
Viking Yachts are offered in a few different models adding diversity and versatility to the brand. The categories for the Viking Yachts include the Viking Open Bridge Convertible, the Viking Enclosed Bridge Convertible, the Viking Open yachts, the Viking Billfish (though most of these are boats and not large enough to be recognized as yachts), the Viking Sport yachts, and Viking motor yachts. As one would expect, each of these categories has a number of models and configuration options available. Add to this the company’s dedication to customization and modifications to suit the purchaser and you are quite apt to find yachts from Viking which are one of a kind.
Building the Viking Brand
In recent years, the company has had to cut back on the employees which build the Viking boats. Prior to 1991 the company had close to 1500 employees. Per the official Viking site, the number of employees was reduced to 80 persons due to new taxation laws which were introduced in the earlier part of the 90s. Consequently, the supply and demand hit a bottle necking in the production. Too many owners but not enough employees to build the boats. The result is that the brand has become somewhat exclusive. While the Viking brand has slowly gained back the momentum of prior years, the economic blow to the production and manufacturing of the yachts has been slow. Those seeking to purchase a new Viking yacht for sale may find that the waiting time is substantially long.
Viking boats is known globally, specializing in boats in America, China, Italy, France, and Japan. Because the brand is so well known potential buyers may be able to evaluate new models and yachts through the numerous boat shows that the Yachts participate in annually.
Reducing electrical dependency
One of the interesting focuses of the company is to create a vessel through a plant that focuses on reduction of waste and superfluous spending of electricity. To reduce its imprint upon the economy, the Viking Yacht brand has begun to use turbines as well as power options which use natural gas over more wasteful solutions used by other companies.
Power
Coupled with the expectation of the boat to be built to endure several nights upon the open seas is the expectation of power. Viking boats are powered with CAT engines, primarily, but as the company does customize boats, there is the option to upgrade the power and inboards.
