About Motor yachts
Understanding Motor yachts for sale
Those seeking a vessel which is slightly larger than your typical boat but smaller then the mega yacht and the super yacht may wish to consider the motor yacht. These boats offer a variety of usage and are available more readily in the market than the larger yacht selections. Should you wish to find a vessel which offers the functionality of a smaller craft but the luxury and comfort of the yacht, then here is what you should consider about the motor yacht.
The Size
When one talks about yachts, the general mindset is that the boat has to be monumental. However, this is not true. Yachts can be classified as being such if they are over 40’ in the L.O.A. For the motor yacht category, this gives the potential buyer a substantial market. In most cases the motor yacht will range from 45’ to the 75’ range as they are marketed more to families and private investors who wish to have a stylish seasonal or recreational craft rather than those who wish to use the Yacht for commercial purposes (which tends to be the primary function of the mega and superyachts).
Motor Configurations
Though the motor yacht falls within the classification of the yacht family, it does not mean that the motor configurations are typical to that of the super and mega yachts. In some models you will have an inboard motor. Yet, due to the size of the vessels (that being those which are 45 to 60 feet) you may find that the yacht is equipped with multiple high powered outboard motors such as the Seven Marine. In most instances this is not the case, as most purchasers wish to have a transom that is free from engine obstruction.
When purchasing a motor yacht for sale which falls into the 40’ to 50’ range, potential purchasers should check with the local boating authorities as to the areas which are suitable for operating the vessel. In Florida, there are several location where inboard motors are prohibited. Though the area may be large enough to navigate your yacht upon, it is best to always check to ensure that you can legally do so.
A different type of cabin
Cabins for the motor yacht are luxurious, but buyers should understand that they are typically not to the level of the larger yachts. Again, this is primarily due to the targeted market. There are motor yachts for sale which allow you to upgrade the materials and the layout, and some companies will work with you for a total customized cabin experience. Generally, the cabin will be substantially smaller than that of the typical yacht, but larger than the sleeping quarters of the center console boats. Additionally, where the smaller boats are prone to high levels of plastic and synthetic looking wood and interior materials, the motor yacht is more apt to have beech wood, mahogany, and plush fabrics.
Aesthetics
Depending upon the model that you choose, you may have either an encompassed cabin, a cabin with an open flybridge, or a tier style navigation design. Trends in navigation lean more to the dual cabin with the open flybridge currently. The two-tier design is trending but on smaller craft.
Window configurations on modern motor crafts lean to the curved “wind-blown” aesthetics apart from motor yachts which are striving for the classic rounded window look. In most yachts the decks are equipped with high gunwales and low resting transom seating.
Purchasing a Motor yacht
Due to the availability of pre-owned vessels, many first-time motor yacht seekers prefer to seek a pre-owned vessel. Using a brokerage to find such a yacht is recommended as the brokerage can help to negotiate price, inspect the yacht, provide documentation for licensing and transferable warranties, as well as ensure that you have the broadest selection of models from reputable manufactures and dealerships.
Motor yacht buyers will find that the price of the pre-owned motor yachts for sale are lower than that of the custom built and that the wait for construction is not present. That being stated, it is highly important that the potential buyer inspect the inbound motor, perform a water test, and ensure that the tags and other documents are current for the motor yacht they are seeking.
